If Libya's spectacular seaside Roman ruins were located anywhere else in the world, they would be thronged with tourists. But until recently, for most travelers, the ruins might as well have been on the moon. Because of ruler Col. Muammar Qaddafi's alleged involvement with international terrorism, the country was considered a pariah state for years.
Simply getting to Libya was difficult for most travelers. International airlines had been barred from the country because of U.N. sanctions. However, the government has established a ministry of tourism and hired a British consulting firm to help drum up business. And with the suspension of U.N. sanctions and the retraction of a U.S. travel ban, perhaps those gorgeous ruins will be crowded with travelers sometime soon. Noting that 350,000 tourists visited the country in 2003, the tourism board is hoping for 1 million tourists a year by 2010.
