Georgia, Asia travel resource.

During the years it was part of the Soviet Union, Georgia was the top destination in the Caucasus region, offering magnificent monasteries, historic sites and scenic mountains. Wedged between Russia and Turkey, with a long shoreline on the Black Sea, it was known for its balmy climate and its fabulous food and drink. While the sights are still there, the country is enduring economic difficulties and a violent separatist struggle between the government and the breakaways republic of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Adzharia.
In November 2003, President Eduard Shevardnadze was forced to resign after weeks of massive protests in the capital. In new elections, Mikhail Saakashvili was swept into the office of president, signaling a westward shift in government policy.
We think Georgia is one of the most fascinating countries in the region, but visitors must exercise caution. There are a number of areas of high risk. If possible, travelers may want to avoid the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, areas near the border with Russia, the Pankisi Gorge north of Akhmeta, the Svaneti region and the Zugdidi and Tsalenjikha districts of the Samegrelo region. Nevertheless, adventurous travelers will delight in rediscovering the cave monasteries, beautiful mountain scenery and legendary family feasts that once made Georgia a top tourist destination.
