Berlin City Guide
Berlin seems addicted to change: Before Berlin's roller-coaster ride through the 20th century, a 19th-century observer remarked Berlin was always on the verge of becoming, never simply being. The fall of the Berlin Wall and Berlins's reunification has only hastened Berlin's reinvention as a political, business and entertainment center.
Even Berlin's landscape has changed drastically to yield some impressive results. In the new government quarter, the straight line of office building's contrasts with the curving glass train station and the Reichstag's glass dome. South of the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin's refurbished Potsdamer Platz bristles with skyscrapers and a tentlike structure, and a rediscovery of Berlin's waterfront is in progress. New restaurants, nightclubs and cafes line Spree River and Berlin's many canals. New Berlin's calling card is architecture of glass and steel, but Berlin still boasts lovely parks, canals and forest-rimmed lakes. Berlin's new Jewish Museum is an architectural thunderbolt in Berlin, recollecting two millennia of German Jewish history.
Berlin draws fewer international flights than Frankfurt's airport, but three airports serve Berlin: Flughafen Berlin-Tegel Airport (approximately 20 minutes northwest of central Berlin), Flughafen Berlin-Schonefeld airport (about 40 minutes southeast of Alex in Berlin), and Flughafen Berlin-Tempelhof airport (directly in central Berlin). Taxis, express buses and the subway system provide good transportation between the three airports and Berlin.
